Turning Logs Into Bowl Blanks
This is just a little video of how I prep blanks to be made into bowls later on. My preference is to turn the bowls on the lathe soon after cutting the blanks out of the log, but I didn't have time to do that right then. Instead, I did what I could to ensure I end up with a blank that has as few cracks as possible when I go to use it.
Just so you know, for every person who preps blanks like these, there's a different process. This is just the way I do it.
To prep these blanks, I did two main things. The first was to make sure I cut the pith (center) out of each blank. While I'm at it, I'll also cut a flat on the outside of each blank to make it easier to cut it into a circle on the band saw. The second thing I'll do is seal the ends with something. A popular option is to use some type of wax emulsion sealer, often referred to as "end seal", but it will go by other names and other brands. I've also used paint and wood glue with excellent results. Since the ends will dry faster than the centers, they will shrink and crack. Sealing the ends slows the drying process, and the entire piece has a better chance to dry uniformly. Regardless of what I use, I always make sure I have two good coats on the ends.
A little side project here is cutting the centers out of the slabs that were left after I cut the blanks. I'll seal these fine little chunks of lumber and use these thick pieces in other small projects.
Although this method is popular, it's not a perfect system. Results can change if there's a knot or other defect that will cause the wood to dry unevenly. I've had very good results with this method in the past, and it fits in with the time I can dedicate to the task.
That being said, I've had very good results with a number of different methods, and a little research will find you the best way to do this for yourself. Enjoy the task, do what you can to maximize your success, and remember to work within your abilities.

Vise Mounting: Quick and Dirty!
Переглядів 3814 роки тому
I recently passed my outside vise on to someone else who needed it more than I did. This gave me the opportunity to mount another larger vise outside so I don't have to do any major metal cutting and grinding inside of my woodworking shop. This vise was originally inside my shop and has been my main vise since I've owned it. The mounting is very quick, simple, and functional. I'll probably have...

My First Flint & Steel Fire- Making a Striker and Char Cloth

This is my little journey on how I arrived at my first flint and steel fire. I've used other methods to start fires without matches, but I've never used this one. The common thread among nearly all those videos was that they had some sort of a charred material to catch a spar...

Burning Initials Into a Hope Chest

Rather than using a woodburner, this is what I'll do if the size of the project permits it. I misaligned the "18" and I used the wrong wire for the long legs of the letters. That's what I get for letting the camera take priority over the project, but hey, it was still fun. Hope someone out there learns a little something! Maybe I should just invest in a brand... And while you're here doing this...

You might have set a world record as the guy who put the most work into his cant hook handle... and I say that as a guy who uses the "go hard or go home" rule myself.
Was the log used for making this cant hook handle seasoned (dry) or was it green? I will be making one soon.
The wood was seasoned for several years. My thought is that if it was green, it could shrink and cause the pawl on the end to loosen up. Good luck on your handle!

Hi Mike I actually had a question about the stairs you made for arsenic and old lace. The comments are turned off so I am trying to contact you through another video. Can you message me please? Thanks!!

I do like my battery operated impact. It makes a job like this easy. Handy thing to have a vise around to work with. Just subbed so I will be back.😁😎
Good morning Mike. Learned a few things this morning. I didn't know it was a good idea to also apply the sealer to the sides for a couple of inches. Thanks! Cheers!
Hi Gord! It's what I was taught to do by the "Old Guys" I hang around, so if it's good enough for them, then it's plenty good for me too. I felt like it was especially important for the birch because of its high moisture content, and I know that the moisture difference between the ends and center would be significant if left untreated. I've also never worked with birch before, so I was doing what I could to maximize my success. I have high hopes for them though! Take care! --Mike
Hey man.... I was wondering who was robbing the wood pile .... I was planning on burning that next winter to keep warm !!! LOL.
Aw heck, we'll just have to wear an extra pair of socks that day.

Thank you Sir! I appreciate it. Yes, 2-3 years is about how long it will be before I get around to using these. Good thing we woodworkers are a patient bunch!

I think you should have made two, Wendell is a little hard one things. Nice job and looks good.

Hey man.... first comment. Nice job. 👍
Yes Sir, you have great son and law !!! 👍
while I like the idea of making your own striker (and I have done so myself) I also believe it is also beneficial to buy a striker from a craftsman who has perfected their craft and makes quality strikers. I also believe in getting knapped flint and most bought strikers come with ready to go flints. BTW you should cover your tins hole with alfoil after you take it out of the fire so as to stop any extra air getting in there just to be certain your char cloth doesn't spontaneously combust.
Thanks a lot for the advice. I didn't see anywhere that I should cover the hole after removing it from the fire, so I didn't even consider it. I'll be sure to address that in the future. I've also seen a number of strikers made by expert craftsmen, and they are both beautiful and functional. Watching a seasoned blacksmith is a joy as well. It's certainly not outside the realm of possibilities for me to end up with a proper striker some day. I do like to make tools I use when reasonable, and this was one of those things where I had a drawer full of old, worn out files and an entire road loaded with creek rock. It's not the best setup, but it was good enough for me to catch a spark on the first strike with it being the first time I ever tried char cloth. This was all in good fun, and the experience completely lived up to my expectations. Take care! --Mike
@@21mph12 I've gone the other way and now collect strikers, and buy too bloody many of them...LoL Flint and steel can become addictive. I now sit out on my back porch each night striking steel against stone, I find it cathartic.

There's a reason for that!
That old guy is a right good sized man lol
Really nice cedar! I would sure love to find a saw like that. Are there any available?
They're out there, but I wouldn't say that they're common. This one was from an old farm. Much of it was buried in the dirt, and the blade was unusable. Luckily, we found another blade at a farm auction. After some work on the rest of the mill, we got it running. It really was a lot of fun though.
Very good...no inglês.... Realengo/ RJ.. Brasil.. Bolsonaro é good.
Inteligente esse viu. Parabéns.

You are so skillful man. I like it. But please you careful with the saw. Good luck

WOW that wood is beautiful and I like your rig. Easily handled by one man .
Indeed, but two is better, and a third keeping watch on the tractor would be perfect.
How old is this Foley- Belsaw mill ? I love cedar. I have cedar ceilings & shelving in all my closets. I making a 2 sq ft stool. I like working in cedar. It looks like a bitch to saw.
I'm not really sure. This predates the M-14 of which there are manuals available from the 1960's. The cedar actually saws really well, it's the oaks that it tends to have a little trouble with. Thanks!
21mph12 : l have oak beaded board ceilings in living room, dining room, bedroom, nook, hall, 1/2 bath. If l was building another house, or moving into another house l would have to have my wood ceilings. It's a lot of work, but well worth it. Saw on 21mph12

I have tons of cedar logs that I want to get milled for raised beds. Is it very expensive to have soMe one come In and do that?
I'm not really sure. We're just doing this for fun!
I love this set up. I prefer it to the bandsaw mills and the swing blade mills. PTO powered .
Can't say I have much time on a band mill, so I don't know how they feel, but I do know that this one is a lot of fun to run.
Betcha this old man is stronger than you.
Betcha you're right. Should've seen him in his prime.
Muito bom..
Bad Ass brother!
Looks like a big steak. I'll have mine rare. 😆
Mis felicitacion a este !! Gran maestro x su espectaxylar tabajo . saludos a todos .
Hola muyy bueno está su invento para acerrar madera
It appears that every four passes you lose a board to sawdust with that thick circular saw. Plus the loss every time you turn the log. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
I wouldn't say you're wrong at all. The yield from a band saw mill is definitely higher, but this is the mill we have, and we're making lumber we didn't have before. Thanks for watching!
The lost lumber could pay for a new bandsaw mill over a period of time payments, then you would own it free and clear. Add the depreciation and sales tax write off and it may be a win win.
Cool job guys!
I sure hope the man running the sawmill has hearing protection!
He's wearing earplugs that can be seen in multiple parts of the video. Thanks!
